Synaesthesia has been traditionally treated as a rhetorical device and occupiesa position of different disciplinary studies. With the development of themselves, those disciplines keep seeking for new angle of researches on synaesthesia.Cognitive science, especially cognitive linguistics, has reached its crest in recentyears and provided novel approaches to the discovery of thinking model behindlanguage when dealing with synaesthesia which has been classified as metaphorbased on the famous embodiment-cognition-language pattern according to itsmental operation mechanism.William Wordsworth has received much concern as one of the mostoutstanding English poets since the Renaissance and his works have been widelydiscussed in academic world. Present studies, however, focus to a great extent onthe poems’ themes and their acceptance in China. Conceptual integration theoryrefreshes the studies of synaesthesia by virtue of cognitive metaphor and breaksthrough conventional perspectives of synaesthetic researches. New method hasbeen available for translation studies on synaesthetic metaphor. This thesis gives a brief introduction of previous studies on synaesthesia andsynaesthetic metaphors and poems of William Wordsworth. Subsequently, conceptual integration theory (CIT) has been elaborated in detail and synaestheticmetaphors in the book Selected Poems of William Wordsworth are analyzed. Bycomparing the source text and its translation by Yang Deyu, synaestheticmetaphors are discussed systematically. Within the framework of conceptualintegration theory, their cognitive projections have been analyzed and theircognitive mechanisms fathomed in order to interpret and stimulate the on-lineintegration of translator. In a word, this thesis aims at discovering mental operationprocess of translating synaesthetic metaphors and proving CIT has formidableexplanatory power over them. The translation process has been testified to be morethan decoding and encoding and limited by many factors. It is hoped that thepresent translation studies of synaesthetic metaphor will be enriched.
