A Comparative Analysis Of Two Chinese Translations Of Pride And Prejudice In The Context Translation Mode

This thesis provides a comparative analysis of two Chinese translations of Pride and Prejudice in the context translation mode. The thesis excerpts several discourses from the novel in terms of four characters, conducting an analysis of the variables of register in accordance with the systemic functional grammar. The author further points out the differences and similarities between the two translations in distinct contexts, with respect to three dimensions, namely, lexical item/phrase, syntax and discourse, and tries to look into those differences whereby the two translations take on differentiated pragmatic effects.This thesis comprises four parts. In the first part, the author shows the growing attention on the importance of so-called translation context to which the predicaments in translation practices contribute much dynamic and the very reason for targeting the two Chinese translations. The second part is literature review where the author introduces the context translation mode based on the systemic functional grammar while highlighting the concept of translation context and its importance as well as the historical background of the novel and its author in brief together with its two Chinese translators. The third part is case study, the main body of the thesis. The thesis excerpts texts on the verbal processes of four typical characters in the novel, of which the author conducts the analysis of register variables so as to showcase the contexts, and in terms of lexical/phrase, syntax and discourse dimensions respectively, the author conducts a comparative study on the two Chinese translations of which the author evaluates the actual pragmatic functions, so as to justify the importance of translation context in translation practices. The fourth part is the conclusion in which the author concludes the thesis by putting forward two criteria for discourse translation.
