In the new historiography of the New Cambridge History of India, the Mughal Empirehas been defined to be an early modern empire rather than a late medieval one. The articleexplores the monetary economy, fiscal system, bureaucratic organization and noble group ofthe Mughal empire, examines the organization system of the Mughal empire in the frame ofthe modern bureaucratic theory advocated by Max Weber and finds that the structure andoperation of Mughal empire exhibited many modern bureaucratic features consistent withWeber’s relevant theory. Bureaucracy is an important feature of modern states. Therefore, thearticle concludes that the Mughal empire has much modernity and we can not take thatempire’s being a declining medieval one for granted. |
