In many vocational schools, ESP course is becoming one of the most important courses.Students usually met many difficulties and questions when they learned ESP course. Theirmajor question is how to learn and remember the English words effectively. In order topromote the ESP vocabulary teaching effect, through consulting the relevant literature, theauthor found that so far, most of the studies of vocabulary focused on students’ vocabularylearning strategies. But there are few studies about vocabulary teaching strategies, especiallythe ESP vocabulary teaching strategies in vocational schools. It is found that some expertsand scholars put forward the deep processing strategy, the semantic paradigm and semanticsegmentation strategy which are based on the levels of categorization of cognitive linguistics. They also found that these vocabulary teaching strategies were very useful for ESP invocational schools. So, the thesis takes levels of categorization theory as both the startingpoint and basis. The following experiment proves that the deep processing strategy, thesemantic paradigm and semantic segmentation strategies are very useful in ESP vocabularyteaching in vocational schools. This paper mainly used the experimental method. The experiment lasted four months.94students took part in the experiment. They were in Grade One and came from two classeswhich the author taught. There were46students in class5and48students in class6. Class5was the controlled class and Class6was the experimental class. The two classes were parallelclasses. Before the test, all the students had the similar English learning experiences. In thecontrolled class, the author used the traditional vocabulary teaching strategy. But in theexperimental class, the author used the deep processing strategy, the semantic paradigm andsemantic segmentation strategies. In order to ensure the reliability and the validity, in theexperiment, there were two research instruments: interview and test papers. From the analysisof the experiment results, the author found that the deep processing strategy, the semanticparadigm and semantic segmentation strategy are provided an ideal ESP vocabulary teachingstrategy for teachers and provided an effective method of learning ESP vocabulary forstudents. These new teaching strategies promote the reform of English vocabulary teachingand also improve the students’ imagination and creativity.
