Alan Hollinghurst, the contemporary British writer, often uses the theme of gay men in his novels, but the gay characters in his novels are different from others. He is good at writing the lives of homosexuals from an aesthetic perspective, which is’ mainly embodied in his fourth novel named The Line of Beauty. This paper will define aesthetic survival from the aesthetics of body, aesthetics of survival, art of performance, life experiences and other aesthetic dimensions. It combines Nick and his lovers’living philosophy and lifestyle with the consumer social background of the novel, and will also explore the aesthetics and troubles of gay in the novel.This paper is divided into three parts, including introduction, the main text and the conclusion. The part of introduction introduces the background and reasons for the topic, the research status of the novel, the significance of the topic and the research ideas as well as the main content of this paper. The main text part contains three chapters as follows:Chapter one is called the Carrier of the Aesthetic Survival, the Body. This chapter focuses on the analysis of body image and body worship, homosexual desires in the context of aesthetic sense.The second chapter is called Practice of Aesthetic Survival. This chapter discusses the relationship between life and art, the topics of desires, hedonistic and the care for life in the novel from an perspective of aesthetics of survival.Chapter three is named the Strait of Aesthetic Survival, the Lonely Homosexual Individuals. This chapter includes three parts, the inner loneliness, anxiety of coming out of the closet, and limitations of the body. It demonstrates the pressures from society and family also the torment of HIV gay characters faces in Alan Hollinghurst’s novels.The part of conclusion summarizes the Aesthetic Survival and its predicament in the novel, and the purpose of this paper. This article aims to probe the aesthetic relationship between a variety of art forms and the living condition of homosexuals, to explore the artistry of the texts. At the same time, this paper analyzes the difficulties the gay face to conduct a comprehensive interpretation of the novel.
