Chu Hsi and Lu zuqian compiled Jin Si Lu together in1175(Song Dynasty), trying to promote Neo-Confucianism and introduce to beginners. It includes quotations from four philosophers in North-Song Dynasty, namely Chou Tun-i, Cheng I, Cheng Hao and Chang Tsai. However, Jin Si Lu was regarded as a book that Chu Hsi reestablished the tao-tung and defined the scope of Neo-Confucianism but not limited to give introduction to beginners. Therefore, Chu Hsi’s choices resulted from his thoughtful consideration, which made the book more significant. As one of the most important philosophers in Song Dynasty, Chang Tsai built his own system based on the idea of qi and established Guan school within the criticism to Buddhism and Taoism. He took responsibility for restoring Confucian tradition and pointed out the mission and ideal for Confucianists meanwhile. His thought had various influence on scholars at the same period. In general, Chang Tsai played an important role in the history of Confucian. The selection and analysis of Jin Si Lu clearly shows Chu Hsi’s attitude to Chang Tsai, which reflects the difference between Chu Hsi and Chang Tsai. In this thesis, I investigate that how Chu Hsi explained Chang Tsai’s thoughts and then show the detailed differences. Thus we can compare and analyze philosophical system of Chu Hsi and Chang Tsai and find out what makes those differences on earth. It will bring us a better understanding about many possibilities to approach Neo-Confucianism. Further, we could know tao-tung in depth. The essay was started from disagreements on Chapter Tao between Chu Hsi and Lu zuqian. Firstly, I analyze the content and constitution of Jin Si Lu and the awareness to reestablish the tao-tung. The Chapter two mainly discussed Chang Tsai’s thought from three aspects in order to reveal a real him. The Chapter Three compared thoughts of Chang Tsai himself with the image that show in Jin Si Lu through Chu Hsi’s explanation. Based on previous chapters, I try to show the conflicts between Chu Hsi and Chang Tsai on the understanding of relationship between Tian Dao and Xin Xing. Since in Chu Hsi’s opinion Tian Dao is a transcendent substance and Xin Xing is experimental. On the contrary, Chang Tsai thought that they are continued in some degree. This is the reason what makes the representation of Chang Tsai in Jin Si Lu.
