Fitzgerald is one of the most outstanding novelists in the twentieth century. In his masterpiece The Great Gatsby, he created a famous classic character Gatsby. In a long time, positive character Gatsby is the mainstream between critics and readers. As the title of the novel, The Great Gatsby, lots of readers agrees with narrator Nick’s point of view, considering Gatsby as a get-rich-quick person and a dream catcher. However, through close reading, in my opinion, Fitzgerald did not agree with the narrator Nick who thought Gatsby was great. The reason why Fitzgerald named the novel The Great Gatsby is in order to satire Gatsby and Gatsby’s values. This is the ironic art in the novel that I will argue in this paper. In The Great Gatsby, Nick has a special status. He is not only the narrator but also a participant in the story. In this paper, I will discuss the reliability of the narrator in the first place. In order to avoid confusion, I will distinguish between Nick’s point of view and Fitzgerald’s point of view. In the second place, from the reliable narration and narrative gaps, I will discuss Nick how to "talk" the story about Gatsby in order to create a great Gatsby. Also, I will find the true meaning in the novel which hidden in the cross-border perspective and fill the narrative gaps to help readers know the real Gatsby. At last, I will analyze the novel from macroscopic perspective and historical perspective. With the help of Marxism and consumerism, we will find out that Gatsby is confined by era. At that point, Gatsby is not great. In the first chapter, I will illustrate the unreliable narration of Nick’s. As a result, Fitzgerald’s and narrator’s views are different. We can prove the unreliability of Nick from Nick’s inadequate coverage and over reported of events, the tendency of value judgment and the lack of self-knowledge. At the same time, I will draw the outline of Nick’s personality and reveal the novel’s appearance that the description of Nicks is not in conformity with his action. When the readers realize that Nick used to lie and have moral issues and accustom to using money first principle to judge others, they will overturn the impression of Nick. Nick changed himself an honest person into a speculator. Based on this, I can draw conclusion that Gatsby has secretly satirized by Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald pretends to observe Gatsby with secular vision. That is the reason why Fitzgerald thinks Gatsby is great. In the second chapter, I focus on Fitzgerald in order to make the novel presents ironic art what did he do in the reliable narration and the narrative gaps. In the novel, Nick shows such a story that Gatsby wants to regain Daisy’s love and tries to get rich within a short time. But unfortunately, Gatsby was framed by Daisy. In the end, the innocent Gatsby died for his lover. But if we rearrange the story elements in chronological order, we can find out that there is a big difference between facts and Nick’s version of story. At this level, irony structure formed between facts and appearance. Moreover, we can explore what Fitzgerald’s real intentions from Nick’s cross-border perspective. In Fitzgerald’s view, Gatsby is eager to have Daisy rather than loves Daisy. When the core love factors was denied by Fitzgerald, the readers have no choice but to take a new look at the novel. At this point, the readers will suspect that Gatsby is not great. By adding the background in the1920s in America, We can get the truth that Gatsby’s money is illegal. Under these circumstances, we can deny Gatsby’s millionaire status. In the final chapter, we will analyze Gatsby is not great from his failure of love, his limitations of values and his behavior indirectly lead to the death of Myrtle and Wilson. Now, we can conclude that Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby is to mock the Nick and Gatsby. Chapter one Chapter two and Chapter three has linked by logic and reveals the ironic art in the novel.
