Abstract: Social education refers to the education for the mass that are out ofschool and can not be divorced from production. It takes the society as a place foreducation and teaching activities, and it also closely links people’s production and lifewith education and teaching work. Comrade Mao Zedong ever called it a long-term largeschool. Which was from1935-1947, Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region was theplace where CPC (Communist Party of China) Central Committee was located, and itwas also the rear of Chinese revolution. Under the leadership of CPC, the Border RegionGovernment launched a vigorous social education campaign and made remarkableachievements: the social outlook in Border Region was changed and people’s culturallevel thus improved; people’s enthusiasm for the war was stimulated and their politicalparticipation expanded; the social and economic development of border region werepromoted, all of which provided a strong support for the revolutionary war andconsolidated the Chinese Communist Party’s border regime.This paper will be conducted from five aspects based on the existing results.The first section explains the great significance of the social education in the BorderRegion. Taking the social education of Border Region as the research subject, this paperincludes the social education of Liberation War into research perspective, which is ofgreat significance of filling the academic gaps. It is the basic task and requirement of thestudy of Marxism in China to comprehensively sort out this educational practice and torestitute the authentic history. Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region is the prototype ofnew China, so a systemic study of its education experience and lessons has practicalsignificance for today’s new rural construction.The second section demonstrates the historical inevitability of social education inShaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region. The necessary conditions for the Border RegionGovernment to carry out education campaign are: the backward social outlook in BorderRegion, people’s low-level political consciousness and unclear understanding of the war,and the urgency to stabilize the Border Regime. The favorable conditions for the Border Region Government to carry out education campaign are: the formation of educationaltheory of the Party’s New Democratic theory, the initial improvement of socio-economicand cultural conditions of Border Region and the great support from the nationalgovernment and community.The third section combs the great practices of social education inShaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region. Taking the Border Culture and EducationConference in1944as a node, this paper clarifies the development process of socialeducation, putting its focus on the one of Liberation War. Abiding the method ofhistorical research, this paper will illustrate the purpose, objects, ways, methods and theachievements of the social education campaign in Border Region from the perspectivesof policies and institutions, objects and forms, contents and curriculums.The fourth section evaluates the historical functions of social education inShaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region. This education practice raise people’s culturallevel and improve the social style of Border Region, enhance the people’s production andlife skills and mobilize people’s enthusiasm for production, faciliated the social andeconomic development of Border Region and strongly support the Anti-Japanese Warand the Liberation War, and propelled the building of “Exemplary Anti-JapaneseDemocratic Government”.The fifth section concludes the experience and lessons of the social education inShaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region. The basic experience of success is: Party’scorrect leadership, the close combination of education and production and living, respectfor the people’s demand, and the insistence on the united front. The lessons are: thedivorcement from the actuality of Border Region to a certain extent, the contrary topeople’s will at a certain stage, and the anxiety to pursue success and formalism in acertain phase.
