The Research On Populism Of The May Fourth Period

Populism as a thought introduced into China in May fourth period that various western thoughtsappear in China, and it has important influence on Chinese society. Populism has unique form withdifferent social background and period. But there is a judgment system of common value of that emphasison the pursuit of people’s sovereignty, collective autonomy, equality and freedom of social life, and alsowith a variety of forms and ways of realization.This paper studies on populism mainly focuses on the particular period of May fourth. Thepopulism of May fourth period influenced by Russian Populism and showing some Russian, such asemphasizing the sovereignty of people and promote the new village construction. However, the populism ofMay fourth period can be accepted by Chinese intellectuals has close contact and communication and socialbackground. First of all, it is composed of anarchism gradually evolved, and the reason of intellectualstoward populism is they pursuit the social democratic. Secondly, Chinese traditional culture laid thefoundation of the produce of populism. In the specific social environment and ideological background, theMay Fourth period showed the characteristic of populism. The extreme development of populist,anti-intellectualism and the new village construction theory are the populism forms in that period. Thecharacteristics of May Fourth period populism in a certain extent also with the Russian populism shadow,but it is more reflected the populism ideological feature of this particular period. Although the populismideological of May Fourth period deviation from the road of intellectual thought, but it also enrich the concept of democracy and the promotion of social progress.
