Because of their potential carcinogenicity, fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) have been explicitly banned in many countries as additives. It is significant that development of analytical methodologies for the accurate determination of FWAs in paper materials, especially those in contact with human body, will beneficial to monitor FWAs abuse and protect the health of consumers. On the basis of previous researches and experiments, the qualitative and quantitative detection methods were developed for analyzing the FWAs in some closely-contacted paper materials with human, including paper napkin, tissue paper, cigarette-made paper. This thesis mainly consist of four parts:The1st chapter,’Introduction’, concisely reviewed the whitening principles, types, applications, harm and detection methods of FWAs. Purpose, significance and contents of this study were also introduced. In order to investigate the specific levels of the migratable FWAs in paper materials contacting with the human body, the2nd chapter,’Determination of the migration of fluorescent whitening agent in paper materials by fluorescence spectrophotometry’, described the establishment of corresponding analytical method via the selection and optimization of various experimental conditions. The results of experiment indicated that the linear equation of calibration curve was y=1.564x+0.054, linear correlation coefficient was0.994from0to1.0μg/mL, and the detection limit was0.30μg/g, the RSD of six determinations was ranged from0.6%to9.8%. The method is simple, rapid and sensitive. Due to the hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) more stable in separation of hydrophilic/ionic compounds (e.g. FWAs) than conventional ion-pair liquid chromatography, HILIC coupling with sensitive fluorescence detector was applied to measure FWAs in paper materials. Detailed study was presented in the subsequent3rd chapter,’Determination of fluorescent whitening agent in paper materials by high performance liquid chromatography’. Sample preparation conditions and chromatographic parameters were optimized, the established method was shown to be stable and reliable. The4th chapter depicted the’Preliminary study for screening of fluorescent whitening agent in paper materials by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-TOF-MS)’. To investigate the types of illegally added FWAs, mass spectrometry parameters were optimized with the known FWAs standards. Under the appropriate conditions of chromatography and mass spectrometry, the screening method of FWAs in paper materials using LC-TOF-MS was established. In conclusion, the qualitative and quantitative analytical methods of FWAs in paper materials were established in this thesis, the article elucidates a series of relatively complete strategies for monitoring the types and dosage of FWAs in paper materials. This thesis might contribute to the further improvement of detection methods, exploration of migration mechanism and the possible health risk related to FWAs.
