Background:In modern psychology, Emotion is a form of subjective experience and most of the studies on emotion are all about experimental study. Mood scales and affective pictures are usually used as an instrument to reflect the intensity of the emotion varying. At present, there are a few scales and standard affective picture systems with relatively high reliability and validity. However, the studies of emotion in Traditional Chinese Medicine are still in clinical observat ion phase and cross-checked phase. Lacking of objective and quant i tat ive indices led to a barrier in the study of emotional modernization. For these reasons, study on the affective picture system establishment based on the five basic TCM emotion by sentimental theories and psychological measurements needed to be solved.Objective:To establish an affective picture system based on five basic TCM emotion with sentimental theories and psychological measurements.Methods:Firstly, the study made a literal review on TCM emotion, combining with expert consultation, gave definitions of the five basic TCM emotion and drew several words from the definitions. Then, the study collected pictures by definitions, after that,9experts sorted pictures, and selected7experts’ same division of pictures. And then, A cluster random sample of70undergraduates were investigated to evaluate the classify and emotional intensity for each picture, the emotional intensity evaluation realized by using9-point rating scale, souted out pictures which have60%identity. finally,70undergraduates were selected by convenient sampling to rate the valence and arousal of each picture by self-report in a9-point rating scale.Results:Combining literal review and expert consultation, this study got credible definitions of the five basic TCM emotion and several extractive words from the definitions. It got199pictures after the experts’selection. By the undergraduates’evaluating, there were166pictures in the system, including32pictures of anger,41pictures of joy,8pictures of anxiety,41pictures of grief,44pictures of terror. Most of the pictures’emotional intensities were strong and the scores were upon5. From an overall perspective, The standard deviations of scores on arousal was greater than that on valent. There were gender differences in the two dimensions (p<0.01). According to the different emotion types, anger, grief and terror had similar scores in the two dimensions. The three types of negative emotion also had gender differences in the two dimensions (p<0.01),scores of male students were higher than female students’.Conclusion:This study has set up an affective picture system based on five basic TCM emotion. The pictures had high identity and the emotional intensity scores were reasonable. For each picture, there were type of emotion, identity, emotional intensity, valence, arousal scores, all of these could satisfies the different kind of studies on emotion in the future.
