The African Americans have the special experience in the history of the UnitedStates. African Americans had been slave on plantation for more than200years, afterwhich they suffered from the racial segregation for another100years. The AfricanAmericans were the first race in the America Continent; however, they were the raceat the bottom of the social class for a long time. The racial segregation had led severeracial discrimination to colored people. It was not until the end of Civil War that theAfrican Americans saw the sign of freedom for the race. With the help of Republicanin north, the race gained citizenship and rights in the Reconstruction; meanwhile,African Americans made progress for the whole race on their own in order to improvetheir foundation. As a result of severe racism in the south and the power return of thewhite, African Americans lost their rights again after Reconstruction. From the end of19th century to the early of20th century, the African Americans almost returned to thelife of slavery in plantation without any rights. Such hard situation did not remove thedesire for racial freedom and rights of the African Americans who kept fighting fortheir citizenship under the racial segregation. Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. DuBois are the two remarkable black leaders in that time, who made clear guide for howto gain the rights of colored people. Although it was not that successful at the turn of19th and20th century, the race had established solid foundation for Civil RightsMovement later on. The profound thoughts and the personal charisma of the blackleaders encouraged the African American to rise up.
