Isaac Bashevis Singer(1904-1991) was a famous contemporary American Jewishwriter. He had an important position among the American Jewish Writers whoemerged in the nineteen sixties and seventies. He won Nobel Prize for Literature in1978. Singer’s writing language is Yiddish and his novels are deeply rooted in thePolish-Jewish Ghetto. His masterpiece “The Magician of Lublin” and short stories“Gimpel the Fool”,“The Spinoza of Market Street” play an important role in theworld literature. This paper intends to adopt historical analysis, document analysis and textreading method, viewing from the perspective of literature and religion, and tries toextract “Ghetto Spirit” from the history of the Jewish and Judaism. In my point ofview,“Ghetto Spirit” plays an essential role in resisting different cultures’ influenceand purificating the Jewish moral. This paper uses “Ghetto Spirit” as a methodologyand analyzes Singers six representative short stories. At the same time, this paperdiscusses two very different phenomena in-depthly: Adhering to "Ghetto Spirit" andbetraying "Ghetto Spirit”. Finally, this paper comes to the conclusion: Only believingin God, scrupulously abiding by custom, maintaining contact and “GhettoSpirit”-oriented can Jews have the hope of revival. If Jews forget their history andJewish identity, they must encounter with various frustrations, and who will finallydead abjectly after living outside Ghetto. Modern Jews should guard Judaism andhistorical and cultural traditions, adhering to Jewish identity, depending on "GhettoSpirit", only in this way can Jews obtain national sense of belonging, the inner peaceand the fundamental value of life.
