Charles Dickens was the great realist writer in19th century British, his worksveritably reflects the social reality and the spirit of the times of the United Kingdomand the entire European continent, having a strong sense of realism and criticalnessat the same time also having a rich color of Romanticism, and the gothic feature is animportant romantic factor in his novels. Dickens s creation was deeply affected by theBritish Gothic literary tradition, throughout his15novels created in three periods(The last one is unfinished), more than ten involving the gothic style, in his thirdperiod of creation also called the most important and splendid of the later stage,since his awareness of dark society was growing, the indignant sentiment at thecapitalist system took the place of the early period of optimism, The gothic techniqueis that one of the most powerful artistic forms he used to criticize the realistic societyin his later creation, thus the gothic feature is manifested the most obviously in hislater works. In considering the limited space of paper, I just intensively studied on thegothic factor of his later novels here. His later works include4novels: A Tale of TwoCities(1859), Great Expectations(1861), Our Mutual Friend(1865), Mystery of EdwinDrood(1870).This thesis attempts to combine the authors writing background, writingpsychology among three aspects of scene and plot, characterization and theme toanalyze the gothic factors in Dickens’s later4novels in detail, breaking the limitationsthat only research one or two works, one or two aspects, discussing the reason of theGothic feature in Dickens’s novel from the objective and subjective factors.Dickensabsorbed and learnt from the traditional Gothic literary qualities, meanwhiledeveloped traditional Gothic literature, showing concretely as follows: the expansionof Gothic novel, aesthetic category of “grotesquery” and the diversification ofpsychological manifestation. The value of the Gothic factors in Dickens’s novel, notonly reflected in the innovative development of the Gothic traditional literature, butalso the important complement of Realistic literature, including innocentexaggeration and imagination, poetic symbol and so on.
