The Theme-rheme theory is an very important theory in functional linguistics. After introduce the Theme-rheme theory, this paper use the linguistic data which was collected during practice time in C. V. Starr-Middlebury School in China Kunming to studying with The Theme-rheme theory. This paper study from these aspects:the selection of the theme; the appropriate using of the theme; the "thematic progression" in essay is continuous or not. The studying reflect the error mainly include five types, which are the order of the multiple theme; omit the theme that can’t be leaving out; keep the theme that need to be leaving out; the error in the thematic progression. After analysis the errors, this paper analysis the reasons why these errors happened, which are:the students are disturbed by their mother language; the students’ own problem; the teachers’ responsibility.After analysis the errors and why they happened in the discourse, this paper also use some teaching methods in English teaching field such as pairs of cards, restore sequence, and some primary teaching Chinese methods such as the imitative writing, continue writing, and also the correction method in the second language teaching to enrich the writing lesson of teaching Chinese as the second language. What’s more, author design a experiment by using the thematic progression theory in the real teaching to enrich the discourse teaching in teaching Chinese as the second language.
