Based on Levelt’s (1989) Model of Speech Production and Anderson’s ACT Model(1983), the empirical study explores the correlation between the use of Chinese lexical chunks and the development of Chinese oral fluency of international students which is aimed at providing new ideas and methods to the promotion of international students’ Chinese oral fluency. This study adopts a variety of methods including statistics and comparative analysis which is based on the experiment by eliciting the oral production from a picture-story narration.90speech samples from three Chinese proficiency groups of international students major in Chinese are examined in details in order to explore the development of Chinese oral fluency of these learners and their use of Chinese lexical chunks as well. Data analyses are done by SPSS13.0. In addition, this study does in-depth discussion and analysis from multi-disciplinary perspective such as Psychology, Linguistics, Pedagogic, etc..Four major findings are stated as follows:1. The subjects’Chinese oral fluency increase significantly along with the progress of Chinese proficiency level.2. Phrase-sentence builders are the most frequently used of the four categories of Chinese lexical chunks among subjects, followed by Chinese oral idioms and common collocations, fixed expressions are in the lowest frequency of use.3. In light of the analysis of the characteristics of international students’Chinese lexical chunks, this study finds the average length of Chinese lexical chunks is relatively short, five lexical chunks used most frequently are unexceptionally phrase-sentence builders and oral idioms which are short, commonly used and connective.4. In term of the correlation between Chinese lexical chunks and oral fluency, the use of phrase-sentence builders and oral idioms shows significantly positive correlation with the development of international students’Chinese oral fluency, common collocations show a moderate correlation with Chinese lexical chunks, there is no significant correlation between the use of fixed expressions and the indicators of oral fluency. This study is carried out to discover the correlation between the use of Chinese lexical chunks and the development of Chinese oral fluency of international students, Chinese lexical chunks are classified innovatively, modern computer technology is applied in this study as well. Moreover, this study does in-depth discussion and analysis from multi-disciplinary perspective, proves that the use of Chinese lexical chunks facilitates Chinese as second language oral fluency significantly.
