Self-portrait is a kind of special and attractive drawing style. What self-portraits the western artists create are distinctive in the world art field. In the way of making themselves as models to paint, the artists greatly show their desire and pursue of art. Seeing the history of Western Art, the quantity and various style of self-portraits become an unique landscape. Artists choose rich and varied clothes and gestures to present their wanted roles for the audience. These’roles’ are the real pictures in one period of their life or an expression to be loyal to themselves. However, the appearance and development of self-portraits have a deep relationship with their time, form of artists’thoughts and the change of artists’social and cultural status. We can also think what the artists’self-portraits show their inner heart is a way to express their great artistic ideals. To study the artists’self-portraits, we can not only watch the artists’ efforts in their growing way, but also we can see their achievements; meanwhile, the study of self-portraits is the best materials to analyze the form of artists’ styles.This essay mainly adopts the Literature research method, the Reference and iconography method.Chapter one, first to define the’portraiture’, and then to briefly introduce the history of western portraitrue’s development and the features in a certain underground;part two, the essay discusses around the theme-’self-portrait’ and describes the definition of self-portrait and the brief history of self-portrait’s development, including’What is self-portrait?’;’Some features of self-portrait’s appearance and its primary stage’;’How the self-portrait develops from dependence to independence.’And’The presence of quantity of self-portrait.’ Chapter two, the essay explains the self-portraits’performance in different stages and those content of the expression. In this part, it will analyze and compare thoroughly the self-portraits of the typical artists, so we can have an argument that the self-portrait is the portrayal of the artists. It will discuss from the following aspects:(a) describe the looks of the self-portraits;(b) describe the feeling of the self-portraits;(c) describe the soul of the self-portraits;(d) describe the background of the self-portraits;(e) the self-portraits of objective reproduction;(f) noble artists’self-portraits;(g) autobiographical self-portraits. In the comparison, it will prove no matter what styles, the themes or characteristics of the self-portraits, they are all the portrayal of the artists and they are the artists’ mark left to study for the later generations.Chapter three, briefly explain the reasons why the self-portraits present so many forms of expression. The essay will conclude the reasons from both objective and subjective aspects. Chapter four,’last-stand self-portraits’. The essay will discuss the meaning and the reason of the self-portraits’ exists. As for our students, what is the importance of the self-portraits in the art teaching of our school?Most art masters’ self-portraits are all their self-expression filled with their personal characters. They use their unique opinions to explore themselves and at the same time they show themselves. What’s more, the self-portraits give us precious wealth for us to know and analyze the life of the artists and their drawing progress.
