J. M. Coetzee is a South African white-man writer, who writes fictions in English. He received the Nobel Price for Literature in2003. Very different creation techniques can be found in his writings, including many fictions and three autobiographies: Boyhood, Youth and Summertime, and the latter three constitute his trilogy of memoirs. In writing autobiography, Coetzee adopts fictionization approaches, which is quite different from the conventional one and involves in both fiction and autobiography. To this end, researchers’ debates focus on the literary style of the three works-----fictionized autobiography or autobiographical fiction. Although the three autobiographies have different traits, the inner cohenrence of them is quite obvious, namely Coetzee’s autobiography creation concept and the thinkings on South African history and reality problems. All of these not only expand the content of autobiography, but also enrich the charm of autobiography through the innovation of form. This thesis proposes the central issue planed to solve in the foreword, then sketches the domestic and foreign reseaches on Coetzee and illustrats the significance and basic structure of this paper. The body is divided into three parts. Firstly, the genre of three works of Coetzee is mainly explained to be autobiography by the definition and "Autobiographical Pact" in autobiography theory, so fictionized autobiography is probably more appropriate. Meanwhile, section one also expounds Coetzee’s creation concept of autobiography:fictionalized autobiography is much more realistic. The second part focuses on the analysis of narrative strategies, inculding the tense of the narrative, narrative viewpoint, narrative voice and implied author. On that basic this part investigates how the author combined the contents with the forms to the excellent extent and achieved good aesthetic effects. Part three mainly discusses the reasons of Coeztee’s fictionalized skills from two aspects of moral writing and post-colonial creating context. The conclusion part summarizes the preceding content and indicates that Coeztee, as a post-colonial writer, has expresses critical thinkings on the history and reality of South Africa in his autobiography texts, showing his sense of responsibility and justice as an excellent writer.
