Mussorgsky’s piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition is one of the most originalmusic compositions in19th Century in Russia. Its special structure and its unique useof interlude Promenade has evoked many composers’ interests, who have adapted andtranscribed the original piece into many different ways (it is said that there are alreadyover180arrangements in existence). This dissertation choose Tushmalov、Gorchakovand Julian Yu’s three versions,by comparing their arrangements on Promenade theme,to explore distinct use of orchestration in different periods and styles, and to observethe transition and development of orchestration style from a historical perspective. Byanalyzing and comparing the difference of three version’s arrangement style, texture,orchestra, part configuration, timbre characteristic, period and personal style, as wellas arrangement idea, this dissertation aims to show how these three composers carryon and change a classical piece, also in order to illustrate the education value ofdifferent versions of Pictures at an Exhibition in orchestration, which will providevaluable reference for future researchers and students.
