Yangzhou School In Qing Works On Real Learning Music In The Tradition

The Yangzhou School is one of the most significant academic schools from1711to1820, which is famous for down-to-earth spirit and rich achievements. For theachievements on music, they are mainly related with temperament and the scale of thepalace musical instruments, especially the systematic researches on temperament ofcourt banquet music, flute temperament of Xun Xu and the scale of the palace musicalinstruments. Those researches are with important academic values. This article fromthe Yangzhou School real learning tradition reflected in the writings of the YangzhouSchool of Music, and combined with the descendants of the research, documentationand related archaeological data, to comprehensive discussion of On the Origin ofCourt Banquet Music, Correct Mistakes on Flute Tune of Jin Tai Shi and Researcheson the Scale of the Palace Musical Instruments from the aspects of historical andacademic values by comprising with the researches have done on them.There are four parts constitute this paper. In the first part, two education methods,namely, reasoning and glossing will be introduced as the practical learning tradition ofthe Yangzhou School. And there will be also brief introduction of authors and worksbelongs to the Yangzhou School. For the second part, there will be criticism andanalysis of the temperament in works of the Yangzhou School. It also has commentson the advantages and disadvantages of the researches of Ling Tinkan based on theacademic background of the Yangzhou School. The third part mainly focuses on theglossing of works on the scale of the palace musical instruments of the YangzhouSchool and according to the literature, charts, text definitions points out that the Jiangfan’s research features of shape and structure. The last part of the paper makes apositive conclusion of the historical and academic values of the musical works of theYangzhou School. It is considered as a transmission of traditional academics ofQianjia period. It enlightens the specialization of temperament of court banquet music,flute temperament of Xun Xu and the scale of the palace musical instruments, whichplays a vital role in the academic history of Chinese music.
