The thesis makes a comparison between Aiqing’s poetry with WaltWhitman’s. Although they were from different countries at different times in thedifferent background, Aiqing and Whitman had creation in common. The contextstarts with poems of Aiqing influenced by Whitman and analyses the themes of theirpoems. The two men are spokesman of the times, so their poems have close relationswith their real life. Secondly, Aiqing’s and Whitman’s poems are paean to freedom,equality and democracy. They advocated the free, equal and democratic society. Sothere is no doubt that the themes reflect the inner world of poets. And they werewriters of urban poetry due to they had similar opinion on urban. Their poems havebeautiful and long melody with musicality from aesthetic point of view and thelanguage is colloquial and simple. The image is soul of poetry. The sun, the sea andthe road are three groups of images appearing frequently among lots of images oftheir poems, which establish the poems of Aiqing and Whitman. The female areshaped to tragic characters from male perspective by poets among female images insarcastic and ironic way. Besides, Aiqing has made another breakthrough in poetrycomposition, succeeding in transcending himself. He revealed his creative personalitythrough main key of poems and proses as well as drawing and writing poemsproceeding simultaneously, which form poems with unique Aiqing characteristics.
