David Henry Hwang is considered to be one of the twentieth Century’smost talented Chinese American playwright. In1988by virtue of his drama"Butterfly" won the American theatre drama prize--Toni award, becomingthe first award of the Chinese American writers in American history. Thusestablished his position in American drama history.This caused great controversy critics on Broadway after the premiere,mixed. Most scholars used to study the colonialist view of deconstruction orafter. But I think that the "two characters" of the psychological butterfly isextremely complex and contradictory: Gary, unable to accept the butterflydream broken, to Dutch act tragedy; Song Lilin and inextricably boggeddown in the love and hate, toward the moral sense of the tragedy.
