Mr Fitzgerald (Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald) is one of the most importantAmerican novelist in the twentieth Century. He was known as the United Statesrepresentative writer of the "Jazz Age" of the "Poet Laureate of the United States ofAmerica Literature" and "the lost generation". Although his life is short, but in thetwenty years of writing career has published five novels and more than160excellentarticles full of wit of short stories, a wealth of valuable literature for posterity. Incomparison, the novel "the great Gatsby"(The Great Gatsby,1925) and "tender is thenight"(Tender Is the Night,1934) really laid the status of Fitzgerald in the Americanliterary world, even the world literature, so this article is mainly to the two novels as theresearch object, to explain Fitzgerald himself attitude on consumer culture.Fitzgerald as "jazz age" wet, live and enjoy the thrill of consumption culture andcrazy, he is the embodiment of this era, is also the victim of The Times. Course theinterpretation of his work, his life and his work for his enigmatic life made a the mostappropriate annotation. Fitzgerald depicts vividly in his works in the early20th centuryAmerican consumer culture under the influence of social environment and people’sideology, the hero who has a modern consumer culture, at the expense of their own lifecoordinate for high society a variety of codes. By Fitzgeraldhimself in his work at the same time, the tragic image of the hero is depicted todescribing and extravagance and waste, interpersonal indifference scenario descriptionof it can be seen that in Fitzgerald’s heart most deep place, he is essentially a negativeattitude about consumer culture.In this paper, first of all, in the introduction part briefly introduces the domesticand foreign scholars research status of Fitzgerald, and points out the researchsignificance of this paper. And then in the first chapter mainly discusses the cause andmain features of consumer culture. In the second chapter focuses on the consumptionculture characteristics of postwar American society, and the consumption culture’sinfluence on the writer Fitzgerald and creation of life I. In the third chapter mainlythrough reading Fitzgerald’s novel, especially "the great gatsby" and "tender", to exploreconsumer culture in the concrete embodiment of its text and works under the consumption culture dominates the tragic fate of the characters. The fourth chapter isFitzgerald’s attitude toward modern American consumer culture was reviewed. Finallyconcludes that Fitzgerald to consumer culture is essentially negative this conclusion.
