| Marc Blitzstein is one of the important composers of the American20th century, but also one of the important representatives of the left-wing musical movement, his compositions and musical social activities play an important role to the development of American left-wing music that from1920s to1950s.He has abundant compositions, that involving various fields, including symphony, orchestra, opera, music drama. He also adapted a number of dramatic compositions successfully, which performed on Broadway and receive great acclaim. Not only that, Blitzstein also keen on musical social activities and participated in a famous left-wing groups-Composers’ Collective, that laid a solid foundation for the development of American music of the20th century.The musical drama "The Cradle will Rock" is the most representative of Blitzstein’s compositions, but it is also the most left-wing tendencies of a musical movement works. It is a performance of drama theater plus music. Blitzstein’s compositions are not only absorbed the new techniques and creative ideas of the major schools of20th century widely, but at the same time to maintain the rigorous characteristics of traditional European music and concise musical language. Blitzstein formed its own unique style of music and that composition also performed many times on Broadway stage of the20th century.The thesis consists of six parts of an introduction, four chapters and conclusion. The first chapter describes the life of Blitzstein and his road to the left-wing musical movement. Through the grasping of the composer and the way of creation, we can further deepen the understanding of the composition’s style and strive for accurate analysis of the composition. The second chapter analyzes the "The Cradle will Rock" from the creative background, script analysis, character image analysis and its relationship and we can understand the composition from the dramatic level. The third chapter of "The Cradle will Rock" is the musical analysis, including the themes motivation, the structure of music, the feature and combine of the melody and harmony, orchestrate features these five aspects, to pry out the unique technique of composition. The fourth chapter established on chapter two and chapter three, expounded the musical conception of "The Cradle will Rock", its contribution to American musical drama and20th century American music. Conclusion is based on the contents of four chapters, to summarize the innovations of "The Cradle will Rock" of Marc Blitzstein, and examine this composition in the course of history. |
