Tennessee Williams is the leading dramatist and the vital Southern Americanplaywright in the late20thcentury. Most of his plays take us to the southern statesand show a confused society. In his works he exposes the degeneration of humanfeelings and relationships. His heroes suffer from broken families and they do notfind their place in the society. They are the subalterns and tend to be lonely andafraid of much that surrounds them. Due to various reasons, they cannot becomeintegrated into mainstream society, and end up becoming victims of human brutalitywhile suffering from cultural crisis, family crisis and gender crisis. The paper is divided into three parts. Firstly, based on Southern culture thatTennessee Williams and his plays take us to, it traces Tennessee Williams’ strongattachment to Southern culture, and further explores the images of the subalternsclassified according to their identities in cultural crisis. Secondly, drawn uponTennessee Williams’ own family background, it analyses the influence of his familyto his playwriting, and further explicates the images of the subalterns in familycrisis. Last but not least, it expounds the images of the subalterns in gender crisisby combing through the influence of male chauvinism upon Tennessee Williams. |
