It can be said that his name is closely related to the “the mostsplendid achievements” of China’s new films.John Williams, a famous contemporary American film music composer and a“most prestigious” American Hollywood film music master, whose works for filmmusic are praised as a “textbook for American film music composing”, has composedmusic for many popular film works, such as Superman, Schindler’s List, Star Wars, andHarry Potter. These excellent musical works have exerted important influence both inthe film and music fields.The thesis, mainly taking the analysis of composing techniques as the startingpoint of the study and with the studying objects of the film music works by Chinesecomposer Zhao Jiping and American Hollywood music composer John Williamsrespectively, is to study and compare the characteristics of composing techniques usedin each of their works. Zhao Jiping is deeply rooted in the Chinese folk music, usingthe folk materials to recreate, with the unique pattern of combining the Chinese musicinstruments and the traditional western orchestra, the uniquely colorful harmonylanguage. Whereas, Williams dominates the developing mode of motivation, with hisdistinctive harmonic technique, the symbolic structural features with American heroicplots, and making composing innovation from the tradition. Through the comparison ofthe various composing techniques created due to different cultures, regions, and work’ssubjects and styles in eastern and western film music, the comparative study related tocomposing techniques is carried out.
