According to Shen Zhiqi (2004), deliberate misinterpretation(DMI) occurs whenthe hearer correctly understands the intended meaning which the speaker expresses viaan utterance (x1), the hearer subsequently produces an utterance (x2) which is in someway purposely employed to present the mismatch between the meaning of x1and x2.The hearer thus satisfies certain communicative needs of his own, which means thatdeliberate misinterpretation is a pragmatic strategy adopted by the hearer to fulfill hiscommunicative goals. It is quite different from misunderstanding, which is theaccidental transmission of information. With Austin’s Speech Act Theory, Sperber&Wilson’s Relevance Theory, and Brown&Levinson’s Face-saving Theory as thegeneral conceptual framework, based on the research results of misunderstanding anddeliberate misinterpretation of scholars at home and abroad, this thesis focuses on twoaspects: the emergence of DMI, and the specific role in the study of dimensions inutterance interpretation. The focus of the project is the study on the emergence of DMIwhich is concerned with several dimensions, including the speaker’s dimension, contextual dimension, and functional dimension in the paper. The research results of thepresent study are based on the multiple dimensions, to study the understanding of DMI,including the specific role of emergence, analysis, and classification, which helps todeepen our understanding of the language phenomenon and provides a more effectivereference for people.
