Today’s Chinese society is in a transition period. The differentiation andreconstruction of interest and value and the coexistence and conflict of oldand new systems have brought about a lot of opportunities and challenges inthe process of building a socialist market economy. Public security organsundertake the responsibilities of maintaining social stability and easing socialconflicts. Police officers tend to be the first people to appear on the scenesand directly face the mass. Once the demands of the mass are not well met, afew of them might release their dissatisfaction and frustration on the publicsecurity organs and the police officers. Besides, some police officers are notstrict with themselves and even neglect the laws. These all attribute to theemergence of misunderstanding towards police and ruin the reputation of theentire police contingent Therefore, how to tackle the police image crisis in themass incidents and remodel the police image has become a focus of publicsecurity organs at all levels.This article first theoretically discusses the purpose and the significance,and reviews the literatures of this research. On the basis of a detailedanalysis of the types and characteristics of mass incidents, the meaning ofthe police image and the police image crisis, the article elaborates on therole of the police in the mass incidents and analyzes the three aspects tocause the problems: policemen’s own reason, mass factor, and other socialfactors. Finally, the article proposes some workable solutions throughintroducing the successful experience from Hong Kong, Taiwan and othercountries.
