Environmental Liability Insurance In China

With the rapid growth of China’s economy in the past30years, environmentalpollution has emerged and hindered the economic development of the country. It isurgent for Chinese people to break down the barrier in the way of sustainabledevelopment. Some western countries have set good examples for China to handle theproblem with environmental liability insurance. In2007, environmental liabilityinsurance was implemented as experimental project in China and has made certainachievements in the past6years. However, the job also needs improvement. This thesisstarts with two cases, pointing out that difficulty in collecting sufficient premium andlow insurance claim amount are the major two hindrances in implementingenvironmental liability insurance. Then, after analysis, the thesis indicates that thedeficiency in legislation and environmental supervision, high insurance claim standards,and low insurance interest are the main causes of the hindrance. In the end, the thesisbrings up practical proposal in improving the trial environmental liability insurance onthe basis of what was discussed previously, hoping that the thesis may make somecontribution to the establishment of environmental liability insurance system in China.
