Washback refers to the testing effect on teaching and learning. As one of the most importanttests in China, National Matriculation English Test(NMET) has had an impact on Englishteaching. and learning in middle school. As an important part of NMET, listening testconsequently may impose profound effects on listening teaching and learning in Middle School.Based on both the former researching and the current teaching, with the help of a few researchingmethods as well, the paper intends to make a deeper study about the washback that NMET hascaused.To begin with, the paper reflects the listening teaching and learning in middle school and getssome defects existing in NMET, then the paper adopts a few researching methods such asquestionnaire, classroom observation, interview to get the washback effects from30Englishteachers and120pupils. The results show that in some degree NMET has effects on Englishteaching and learning.The significance of the paper lies in such an prediction that both the English teaching andlearning will benefit from this research, and finally will do some good to the pupils’comprehensive language learning.This thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter mainly focus on the significance andbackground of this study. The second chapter is the literature review. This part also mentions thegeneral information of the “washback”. The third chapter is theoretical framework.The fourthchapter is made up of two parts. Firstly, it recalls the history of listening test in NMET. Specificsabout the design of the empirical study were provided in the second part. The fifth chapter is aboutthe quantitative and qualitative analysis on the results from questionnaire, classroom observationand interview. Based on the discussion of the study results, some pieces of suggestion wereproposed. The sixth chapter refers some limitation of the paper. It also gives some suggestion forfuture study in this field.
