Nowadays, with the world economic integration speeding, the development of China is continuously getting into the world developing track. English, as one of the most widely used languages, is very important in modern society. However, in high school students, English learning disability in remote minority nationality Areas is a widespread phenomenon. These students’English proficiency cannot meet the requirement of The Criteria for English Syllabus in Common High Schools, issued by The Ministry of Education. They cannot keep the pace of the teacher in the English class and always fail to pass the exam, and their English listening, speaking and reading, writing skills are inadequate. They are called "English underachievers". The English underachievers are not only hindering the progress of themselves, but also restrict the education efficiency. The problem also makes the teachers, the school managers and their parents worry. Therefore, many education experts and scholars are concern about the "underachievers". Increasing attention and efforts have been to this problem. However not much has been achieved. Hence, what can we do to transform the underachievers effectively? This thesis uses theories from teaching methodology and educational psychology, applies the method of samples and analyses to deal with the problems of English underachievers from six classes in Grade three in my school. The thesis analyzes the causes of the underachievers learning difficulties, sum up the various factors leading to their low scores and found out the real reasons:the internal reasons and the external reasons. The external reasons come from bad social style, examination-oriented education, single parent family, their parents’low education levels, the teachers’old teaching methods. The internal reasons are the student themselves, which includes the students’mood, will, learning attitude and learning motivation. The thesis has also made some attempts to find the improving methods, and then make corresponding transformation strategies. The full thesis is structured as follows:Part one states the research background and the significance of the study. Part two defines the word "underachiever" and "strategy". It also generalizes the domestic and foreign research situation and development trend. Part three introduces the research purposes and the instrument. Meanwhile, it analyzes the causes of the English underachievers, through the samples and the data analysis. Part four, according to above analysis, we may take specific measures to transform the underachievers. The study shows only by paying close attention to the English underachievers and searching for the causes, can we efficiently do the job of transformation, which ends up improving their study.
