In recent years, learner autonomy has become a hot topic in the educational field; it is also a new developing trend of English teaching in China. In our society, learner autonomy has become an essential ability which qualified talents need to have. To keep up with the times, teachers should break the traditional teaching model and focus on the methods that help students get the information from different ways to enhance their autonomous learning abilities and broaden their English language.The teacher-centered teaching model cannot meet the requirements of the present society. Compared with pupils and junior middle school students, senior high school students have developed higher learning motivation and cognitive ability, which provide a solid foundation of their autonomous learning development. The New English Curriculum Criteria of Senior High School has pointed out clearly that English teaching should emphasize on the training of students’autonomous learning ability and life-long learning ability. Developing English learner autonomy is one of the main goals in the New English Curriculum Criteria. For teachers, developing senior high school students’ autonomous learning abilities is a main task of current English teaching. Therefore, the research of learner autonomy of senior high school students has become an important task for English teaching.In this thesis, the author first has a systematical discussion on learner autonomy from a theoretical perspective. At the same time, based on the author’s practice teaching experience, this thesis aims to research following questions:1. What is the current situation of senior high school students’English autonomous learning ability? What are the main features?2. What factors influence senior high school students’English autonomous learning ability?3. What approaches can effectively train senior high school students’English autonomous learning abilities? In this survey research, the author selected207subjects from XiongYue Senior High School in Liaoning Province to investigate the current situation of senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability. After a six-month survey, a large amount of data was collected through questionnaires and interviews. After a careful and systematic analysis of the data, the author obtains the basic situation of English Learner autonomy of the school. Finally, according to the survey data, the author makes some suggestions and measures to cultivate English learner autonomy of senior high school.Based on the actual survey results, this thesis will discuss English learner autonomy in various aspects. The ultimate purpose of this thesis is to reflect the current situation of senior high school students’English autonomous learning abilities. Through these findings the author seeks some effective approaches to improve English self-learning ability. Due to the limited research conditions and resources, this survey research is only focus on one senior high school of Liaoning Province. This survey results may not exactly reflect the whole senior high school students even in other poor areas, but it can reflect the real situation of this senior high school. At last, the author hopes that this survey research will be helpful for the promotion of English learner autonomy; at the same time, it will make some contributions to the reform of English teaching in senior high school under New Curriculum.
