Politeness plays an important role in the communication. In English class,teaching andlearning can be realized by the communication between teachers and students. Therefore,how to reflect the phenomena of politeness and how to choose appropriate politenessstrategies in assessing language is significant for English teaching. From the perspective ofpoliteness theory,this study analyzes polite phenomena in teachers’ classroom assessinglanguage,classifies the use of the politeness strategies,then summarizes the characteristics ofteachers’ classroom assessing language and its functions.This paper was initiated to take as subjects52English teachers and476students fromsome of the senior high schools both in Hainan province and Jiangxi province. The data wasthen collected from23English lessons by observation, recording, questionnaire survey andthe interview of teachers and students, and was consequently analyzed by SPSS19.0from thefollowing five aspects,(1) the understanding of English teacher assessing language,(2)theview of face need between teachers and students,(3) application of politeness strategies in theassessing language,(4)the effect of politeness strategies in teacher assessing language and(5)the ways of improving the teacher ‘s assessing language. Finally it draws the followingconclusion:(1) Based on politeness strategies, the types of the teacher‘s assessing language typesare as follows: simple identity, discussion, direct correction, restatement, inspiration.(2)Based on the theory of politeness, the teacher’s assessing language presents some obviouseffects: when the functions of diagnosis and adjustment decreased, the functions ofencouragement inspiration improved obviously.(3)The politeness principle has both positiveand negative influences on the teacher’s assessing language. Positive impacts can beidentified as follows: respecting the student; recognizing the subject status of students;cultivating students’ self-confidence; creating a harmonious teaching atmosphere. However,the excessive use of politeness strategies will inevitably bring negative effects: confusing thestudents; resulting in lacking fidelity the teaching evaluation; making teachers feel less ofdignity. From the perspective of politeness theory, this study focuses on the research of theteacher’s assessing language with the intention of improving the teacher’s awareness of usingpoliteness, assisting teachers to recognize the pros and cons of politeness strategies in Englishteaching and then providing some effective theoretical reference for the teacher’s assessinglanguage.
