Obviously, reticence, the same as speech, is one of means used in human communication. However, from the general interpersonal communication to the foreign language classroom teaching, reticence has become one of the major negative phenomenon in this area. Asian students, especially Chinese students have been alleged to be reticent and passive learners in foreign language teaching. In English classroom, students are reluctant to participate in classroom activities; they are unwilling to give responses; they even do not answer questions. Classroom reticence has become an embarrassing problem that English teachers have to face.In order to make a deep research of classroom reticence, the first thing we should do is to have a full understanding of various causes behind classroom reticence. There are some previous researches, but the limitations of these findings are:A) these studies on such a theme are mainly conducted in college English classroom, while there are a few of researches which are about senior high school. B) Though these studies pay attention to the causes and solutions of classroom reticence, the feasibility and effectiveness of the solution fail to be tested in real practice. This research has adopted the combination of the methods of questionnaire, classroom observation and interview to teachers and students from the multi-perspectives. Based on the questionnaire, the author finds out that some students’ factors lead to classroom reticence, but teaching method also affects the students’ performance in senior high English class. Therefore, this paper is to observe the performance of students in English classroom, through comparing two different teaching methods-traditional method and Task-based Approach(TBA).The task-based approach is to enable students to achieve real-life tasks in the English classroom. The main objective of the task-based Approach is to change learners’ learning habits and to mobilize their enthusiasm and positivity. The whole experiment lasts two months and the data obtained from both the experimental class and the control class has been analyzed. The results show that to a certain extent, the learning habits of the students in the experimental class have been changed and the situation of classroom reticence has been improved.
