The multi-point statistics (MPS) is the state-of-the-art among all the methods used domestically and internationally that are applicable to stochastic simulation of the lithic facies of oil reservoir. In this paper, a stochastic simulation of the state of the Karratha lithic facies of the S66well in Tarim Basin in Xinjiang was conducted using the said method. This simulation was intended for findings that could contribute to improved reservoir prediction precision and greater chance of exploration and exploitation success. The increasingly high demand for oil and gas require simulation of lithic facies state with precision that the two point statistics method fails to offer. As a result, our understanding of the geological condition of the reservoir is compromised, which leads to a decrease in the recovery ratio of oil and gas. The MPS methods uses the training image instead of the variation function as is used in the two point statistics method, and is therefore better able than the latter in presenting high precision distribution of complex lithic facies of the reservoir. In this paper, the MPS method is introduced in terms of its principle and strength. When simulating the lithic facies state of the S66well, we categorized the well into four layers in line with the distribution of the sandstone and the mudstone. We processed data concerning lithic facies corresponding to the four layers and input these processed data into the Petrel software. A stochastic simulation by the two point statistics method was made, which yielded the2D and3D distribution diagram of the lithic facies. The MPS method was also used for the same simulation, and the simulated result was compared with that gained by the two point statistics method. The comparison shows that stochastic simulation based on the MPS method overshadows the two-point-statistics-method based one in terms of precision of representation of reservoir lithic facies properties. The MPS method based simulation also proves to provide result that better squares with the actual situation. Therefore, compared with the two point statistics method, the MPS method based simulation is better able to provide precise representation of lithic facies state. Incorporated in this...
