Study of numerous experts and scholars shows that, lexical chunks, which can improve thefluency, the acceptability and the vitality of learners’ English writing, integrate grammar feature andvocabulary feature together, and have a very broad application prospects in the English writingteaching. The study, which is on the guidance of the lexical theory and based on the teaching materials,puts the lexical approach into the English writing teaching practice, and explores the ways to improveEnglish writing levels of the rural junior middle school students. The subject of this research is thestudents of Grade8in No.7Middle School of Yong’an, and the approach to the research adopts theliterature analysis, questionnaire, pre-test and post-test comparative methods. The experimental resultsshow that:(1) The students in the experimental class learned to identify and free use of four types of lexicalchunks, i.e. polywords, institutionalized expressions, phrasal constraints, sentence builders. It is foundthat the polywords and sentence builders are most frequently used based on the significant differencein the results of posttest of the students in the experimental class, it’s shown that the students’ Englishwriting proficiency of the experimental class is higher than that of the controlled class.(2) After the analysis of the questionnaire, the author finds that the students of the experimentalclass in Grade8hold positive views on the application of lexical approach in English writing. Thelexical strategy changes the students’ attitudes on English writing and enhances their writingconfidence.It is found that the development of lexical chunks awareness, in some degree, releases the writinganxiety among students, increases the number of their lexical chunks, improves the extracting speed oflexical chunks in order to better the writing task. By the experimental practice, students are active andinitiative in writing. It’s hoped that the teaching idea and method have been updated, and the previousmethods requiring students to master the words from the sound, shape, meaning has been changedfrom this teaching experiment. The teaching model of lexical chunks, which improves studentswriting proficiency in word expressions, sentences and texts, plays a significant part in writingteaching in rural junior middle school.
