As countries around the world have entered the aging society, aging of populationbecomes a world problem. As a populous country, China also faces serious problems ofaging, with a high level share of elderly, The aging process tends to speed up anddeepen, and "age before getting rich" phenomenon becomes more apparent.With theeconomy underdevelopment, China entered the aging society, which will havesignificant impacts on China’s economic construction and social development.Chongqing entered into the aging society relatively late, but aging in Chongqinghas developed rapidly in recent years. And now Chongqing has become the worst city inaging population.Studies found that population aging in Chongqing will be more seriousand elderly, with a large elderly population and fast growth. Since1997, populationreproduction in Chongqing trends to "low birth rate, low death rate and low growth" andthe elderly population continues to grow in the future. As the consumption of the elderlypopulation is very different from other age population, when the elderly populationincreases, residents’ consumption structure will change.First part of this paper introduces the basic situation of the elderly population inChongqing, including the status of the aging and the features in aging process. Thesecond part analyzes the changes of consumption structure in urban and rural areas andthe impacts of older population on specific consumer needs, and needs for health careand cultural entertainment services is increasing. The third part uses the grey relationalanalysis method to analyze the relation between consumption structure and proportionof different age population, and find that the elderly has greater influence on clothing,traffic and communications, health care consumption, and minimal impact on foodconsumption.The fourth part uses the partial least square method to analyze the relationbetween consumption structure and proportion of older person over65, and find theelderly population has greater influence on education and entertainment, housing, healthcare consumption, and minimal impact on clothing consumption.The last partsummarizes the results of this study, and gives strategies to optimize the consumptionstructure. First, improve the social security for the elderly to increase theirincome.Secondly,accelerate the development of aging industry, to promote the old’sconsumption.Thirdly, develop health care for the elderly, to achieve assuring medicicalwelfare for the old”. Fourthly, establish a system of the welfare service for the old, torealize “assuring welfare service for the old”. Finally, develop the culture entertainmentof the elderly, to enrich their spiritual and cultural life.
