With the growing requirement of storage capacity, mass storage systemshave become the main trend. Storage system evaluation is an important aspect ofthe storage systems, an important theoretical basis and supporting technologies ofthe storage systems research and application. Along with the development ofstorage systems, models, methods and tools for system evaluation are constantlyupdated.This paper has conducted a comprehensive study on the mass storage system,including its development process, the details of the various technologies. Theproposal and development of mass storage come along with the continuousimprovement of people’s data storage needs. From direct-attached storage deviceto the mature of storage networks, from stand-alone file system to the popularityof distributed file system, from the SCSI standard protocol to the spread of FCand iSCSI extension agreement, from GB-level disk capacity to the advent ofTB-level or even PB-level storage arrays, storage systems’ developmentexperienced extremely big changes. From the typical structure of the massstorage system of four levels-the application layer, file system layer, the storagenetwork layer and the storage device layers, this paper analysis their faulttolerance mechanisms, and proposes some usability testing strategies for avariety of popular technology.The paper design and achieve a high availability test platform for massstorage system and some testing suites, benchmark suites, monitor suites, due tothe hierarchical structure of the mass storage system and the study of usabilitytesting strategies based on them. The platform combined with the suites couldevaluate the target mass storage system in the faults injection way, and providedata support for usability evaluation.Finally, we run a testing on a specific target system using the platform, toverify the functionality of the platform.
