In Ad Hoc networks, the energy and the network capacity is limited and thetopology is highly dyna mic. Topolo gy contro l is a technolo gy whic h builds networktopology having some certain properties (e.g., connectivity, symmetry, spanner) byadjusting the transmiss io n power of each node, while reducing energy consumptio nand increasing network capacity. With expans ion of practica l applications, Ad Hoc networks are often deployed inthree-dimens io nal space. Due to the low node density and the comp lexity of thethree-dimens io nal space, the connectivity of three-dime ns iona l networks can not beguaranteed in most cases. The existing three-dimens io na l topolo gy contro l a lgorithmscan not be applied to disconnected networks. Cooperative communication techno logyallows multip le nodes to send the same data simulta neous ly, whic h can extendtransmission coverage and bridge disconnected networks. This paper stud ies how to build network topology that the connectivity isenhanced, the energy consumption is reduced and the capacity is increased by us ingcooperative communicatio n and topology contro l technolo gies in disconnectedthree-dimensional networks. The main works of this paper are as follows. The s ignificance of topolo gy contro l is exp la ined. The existing three-dime ns iona ltopology contro ls are class ified according to different optimization objectives and theshortcomings of these algorithms are d iscussed. The fact that all o f these topologycontrol algorithms can not be applied to the disconnected network is presented.A connectivity-increased three-dimens iona l topology contro l algorithm (CITC) isproposed. The a lgorithm us ing cooperative communicatio n techno logy to enhancenetwork connectivity can be effective ly applied to the disconnected three-dime ns iona lnetworks. The simulation results show that the CITC algorithm s ignificantly enhancesthe network connectivity while saving energy and reducing interference.A clustering-based connectivity-increased topolo gy control a lgorithm (CCITC) isproposed. The algorithm takes into account the clustering strategy to reduceinterfere nce caused by concurrent data trans missio n, so as to enha nce the capacity ofthe network. The simulatio n results show that CCITC algorithm enhances networkconnectivity and reduces energy consumption as well as greatly improves network capacity.A simple and reliable method of extend ing MATLAB to support simulatio n ofthree-dimensional topology control is proposed.
