| In recent years, the study of the China-related reports in the American mainstream media is one of the hotspots in the academic research. Since Beijing held the4th World Conference on Women, Communication field has laid much stress on women. This article is a combination of both. It analyzes the Chinese women-related reports in the American mainstream media. Research of this article based on reports of New York Times from January1,2012to June30,2013. By applying the method of content analysis and text analysis, characteristics of the reports and female are being explored.First of all, on the characteristics of report, this research shows New York Times used a wide range of issues to report Chinese woman, and human rights is the most important point. Emphasis is put on the Chinese problems on the front page of the newspaper. Most sources on the reports are reliable, but on the Tibet issue, you must not presume too much on the reliability of the sources. Most reports are fair and neutral. Negative reports are mainly about political and ethnic problems.Secondly, in terms of female image building, research shows that many female celebrity stars are involved in the reports, and sports stars are involved mostly. Case is the focus of the reports, and political cases are mentioned a lot. Reports are focus on problems in China, such as gender discrimination, social injustice, etc. Middle-aged and young female are mentioned mostly, and characters of them are various. Many rights of women are not ensured, and Taiwan, Hong Kong women are more progress than Mainland women. Middle-class women are more willing to spend money to enjoy life.Characteristics of reports are influenced by multiple factors. First of all, the New York Times’reported style makes it more likely to pay attention to and reveal problems. Secondly, the objectivity of the report is influenced by the method to get news. Thirdly, the New York Times is also deepened the stereotype for Chinese women and China. The mainstream media of the United States has habitual way of building in China after the cold war. Finally, the American national interest also influence the media’s reporting on China.With the development of globalization, countries contact more and more closely, and national images become important resources of one country. The image of a country is affected by the international mainstream media. Based on the research of content of New York Times, we can know what China looks like on this media which has global influence. As the Chinese proverb says, women hold up half the sky, and the female image of a country is important. Research on the image of Chinese women in the foreign media is rare, so this research can fill the lack of related research to some extent. |
