With the development of construction industry, construction enterprises haveoutstanding homogeneity problems and are lack of core competitiveness, which resultin excessive competition. In this regard, by using the theory of the organizationalecology, the ecological characteristics and the survival strategies of constructionenterprise populations are studied, in order to reveal the inherent law of theconstruction enterprise groups to run.By using density dependence theory of organizational populations, the growthmodels of professional contracting enterprise population and general contractingenterprises population with its levels enterprise populations of qualification areanalyzed. The results show that the dynamic processes of the Chinese constructionenterprise populations have the characteristics of nonlinear density dependence, andthat the growth rate of each population and subgroup decrease with the increasingdensity of population during the observation period. It is shown that the competitionmechanism has become the main mechanism influencing the evolution of theconstruction enterprises population. Based on the resource partitioning theory, thestructure characteristics and survival states of construction enterprise populations arestudied by using the comparative methods of the niche. The results show that theconstruction resources are flowing into the general contracting enterprises withsuperfine and grade A qualifications, and that the living spaces of the generalcontracting enterprises with grade B and C qualifications are squeezed. The survivalstate of professional contracting enterprises is worrying and has yet to obtain moreresources for their survival. It is the development trend of the China’s construction enterprise populations that there are a minority of the powerful general contractingenterprises and a lot of professional contracting enterprises in the construction industry. The survival strategies of construction enterprises are further analyzed, and someconclusions are drawn. The larger general contracting enterprises should adhere to“Generalist”, and adopt technical innovation and management innovation to enhanceits brand and to achieve sustainable development. The professional contractingenterprises should implement “Specialist”, and meanwhile make core expertise lean toachieve excellent professional service. There are two survival strategies to select forthe general contracting enterprises with grade B and C qualifications. One is to adopt“Generalist” and becomes larger general contracting enterprises. And the other is toimplement “Specialist” and becomes specialized enterprises with strongcompetitiveness in specific technical areas. Based on the above research, in the view ofthe government, enterprises and industry associations, some concrete proposals are putforward to promote the development of general contracting enterprises andprofessional contracting enterprises from these aspects, such as to create a fair, moderate and orderly competitive environment, to select survival strategies, etc.The research results reveals the laws of the evolution of the general contractingenterprise population and professional contracting enterprises population, whichprovides the scientific reference to formulate survival strategy for enterprises and todevelop policies and panning for government departments.
