At present, the risks faced by financial institutions in general can be summarized asmarket risk, credit risk and operational risk. Market risk and credit risk have caused theattention of the financial institutions long time ago and they were already had severalmature risk management techniques. Financial institutions have established various effectivemanagement systems. Operational risk, although has been put forward at the same time,with other two risks to form as the ’three major risk’ that financial institutions have to face, isdue to the release of 《new Basel capital accord》. With the opening up of financial industries,globalization, complication of banking transactions and application of information technology,effective management of operational risk has become an increasingly important topic of thebanking sector.This project mainly introduces the general theory of operation risk in commercial banksthrough the introduction of the definition, classification and characteristics of operational riskin china and other countries, to have a overall understanding of the operational riskoccurrence; Through the introduction of the manifestation of China’s major Banks’operatingrisks, from personnel, information technology systems, internal processes and other forms ofoperational risk in our country. According to the eight business lines and seven types ofoperation risk events defined by Basel committee, the599samples data collected has beenanalysed in detail.From the data result, the characteristics of the operation risk in commercialbanks in China at present stage has been identified. In addition, through the analysis of theeconomic consequences of several cases, I will find out the causes and give correspondingsolutions.
