The islands and the coastal zone are the special areas of ocean and land interaction, with the great value of economy, science and national defense. Forced by the natural and artificial factors, the surface morphology of island and the coastal zone change quickly, which needs the rapid monitoring method with high resolution and accuracy. The existing methods, such as the satellite remote sensing/the aerial remote sensing/manual surveying/ship-based observing, couldn’t meet the requirements. While the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) remote sensing meets the demands well, with the higher flexibility, higher timeliness, higher resolution and low cost. Considering the monitoring situation of islands and coastal zone, the UAV remote sensing is promoted and tested in this paper, and the main contents and innovations are listed as follows:(1) The calibration of non-metric digital camera is programmed. The calibration program has the functions of calculating the calibration parameters, computing the object space coordinates of image points, and analyzing the results.(2) The workflows of UAV system are summarized. The technological flow regulates the airline design, the image control point layout and image processing for the monitoring islands and coastal zone. Based on the confirmation of field experiments, the workflows is sound and effective.(3) A layout method of the photo feature point is improved. The GPS aerotriangulation, together with the manual feature point setting, is suggested and applied in the UAV remote sensing experiments, which can effectively improve the distribution and amounts of photo-control points in the islands and coastal zone.(4) The coastlines extraction from the UAV DOM has been tested. Based on the results comparison with field measurements and the shipborne laser data, the coastline results based on the UAV mostly agree well with the others. That indicates that UAV remote sensing can be used effectively and efficiently to extract the coastlines.
