Upconversion nanoparticles(UCNPs) doped by rare earth elements is a kind of material which can transforms the long wavelength radiation to the short wavelength radiation. The material has stable chemical properties, high luminous efficiency, and near-infrared excitation light can penetrate tissue and is separated from the fluorescence of the organism, and due to the features the UCNPs in the fluorescently labeled in medical applications of biomolecules have been paid more and more attention.This essay belongs to the area of photobiophysics interdisciplinary research. The UCNPs(NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+、NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+、NaGdF4:Yb3+, Er3+) are made by the rare earth chloride solvothermal method, through analysising of the fluorescence spectra of three materials and scanning electron micrographs.The zebra fish is studied in this paper as a simulated creature, and the effects of the three UCNPs on zebra fish embryonic development and the effects of five kinds of rare earth ions on zebra fish embryonic development are found. Survival rate and zebra fish malformation rate are counted, and rare earth nanomaterials biocompatible is analyzed.The potential toxicity of several common rare earth ions is analyzed to summary the possibility of the illnesss. The results show that the biocompatibilities of three materials are good, but a high concentration of rare earth ions are toxic, and the toxicity of five kinds of rare earth ions is Nd3+> Gd3+> Er3+> Yb3+> Lu3+.
