This dissertation focuses on designing and synthesis of benzimidazolyl nickelcomplexes and as catalysts for ethylene activation. Using Et2AlCl as cocatalyst, thecatalytic behaviors of nickel complexes were investigated and discussed in detail (e.gpressure of ethylene, the ration of Al/Ni, temperature and so on). Three parts are includedin this dissertation as follows:PartⅠ: The progress of catalysts used in polymerization and/or oligomerization ofethylene is summarized, especially for nickel complexes.PartⅡ: A series of 2-benzoimidazol-8-ethoxyquinolines ligands were synthesizedand characterized.PartⅢ: A series of 2-benzoimidazol-8-ethoxyquinoline nickel complexes weresynthesized and characterized. Due to the coordination with solvent and bridged halogenatom, the coordinate geometry around the nickel center can be described as a distortedoctahedron. Upon treatment with Et2AlCl, these nickel complexes showed high catalyticactivities. The catalytic activities exhibited by these nickel pro-catalysts, compare withreported O^N^N-chelate nickel catalysts, the newly catalysts have higher catalyticactivities and batter thermal stability, reveal clear activity trends and there is scope fordelivering new, highly active systems by simple ligand substituent variation.
