The adulteration of chemicals in dietary supplements always exists despite ofprohibitions, which not only threatens people’s health, but also hinders the long termdevelopment of dietary supplement industry. Therefore, it has practical significance todevelop rapid, accurate analytical methods to detect the adulterants in dietarysupplements. Based on the study of electrospray ionization-high performance ionmobility spectrometer, the ion mobility spectrometry methods were developed to screenthe chemicals in dietary supplements for weight reducing, invigoration, diabetes mellitus, improving sleep, reducing blood lipid, relieving cough and asthma, lowering bloodpressure, antiallergic and antirheumatic, then the developed methods were used toanalyze four kinds of the dietary supplements samples claiming to reduce weight, enhancemale sexual performance, reduce blood sugar or improve sleep. Furthermore, apreliminary study of the quantitative determination of adulterants by ion mobilityspectrometry was conducted. The main contents as follows:1. The ion mobility spectrometry principle, structure diagram of ion mobilityspectrometer and its pharmaceutical applications were introduced. The status ofadulteration and the common methods for detection of chemicals had been summarized. The application status of ion mobility spectrometry in detection of chemicals had beendiscussed.2. The parameters influencing the drift behavior of the gas ions generated byESI-HPIMS were systematically investigated. The ion mobility spectrometry methodswere developed to screen the chemicals in dietary supplements for weight reducing, invigoration, diabetes mellitus, improving sleep, reducing blood lipid, relieving coughand asthma, lowing blood pressure, antiallergic or antirheumatic, and the detection limitwas determined as the concentration that resulted in a signal-to-noise ratio of3.3. Screen the chemicals in dietary supplements for weight reducing, invigoration, diabetes mellitus or improving sleep by making use of the methods developed. Thequalitative identification by IMS was confirmed by LC/MS.4. A preliminary study of the quantitative determination of adulterants by ionmobility spectrometry was conducted, including the sibutramine hydrochloride andphenolphthalein illegally added in dietary supplements for weight reducing, andsildenafil citrate illegally added in dietary supplements for invigoration.
