Stimuli responsive substabce are a class of smart materials, which the characteristics can be simply triggered by some physical or chemical stimulating factors, with its benefits of easy-handled, recycling and environmental friendly. Specially, CO2switchable materals, which use CO2as the switchable trigger has certain advantages in application. At present, CO2switchable polymer emulsion system already has a large number of reports. However, water soluble CO2switchable polymers still are rarely to date. Furthermore, the CO2-triggered polymer organic solution which with function of viscosity response varation has got some research while the CO2-triggered polymer water solution is rarely to date. So, we designed to synthesis a series of CO2swticble copolymers and their solution properties will be inveatigate in details. In this paper, random copolymer with different component was synthesized employing conventional reagents:acrylamide (AM), the initiator ammonium persulfate-sodium bisulfate, and N, N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). At the same time, in order to strengthen the CO2swticble abilities of water-soluble polymer, we still synthesis a series of terpolymer composed of acrylamide (AM), N, N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and DMAC16. The optimal conditions were that:monomer concentration20%, initiator concentration0.2%, polymerization temperature40℃, polymerization time4.Oh. Molecular structure of polymer was characterized by H-NMR and IR.Basic experiments were carried out to investigate the property of the water-soluble polymers. A combination of conductivity, Zeta potential and effective diameter analysis proved that both of P(DMAEMA-AM) and P(DMAEMA-AM-DMACi6) are water solubility CO2/N2switchable copolymers. The existing forms and aggregation state of those copolymer molecules in aqueous solution exhibited a reversible change in the course of response to CO2and N2. Due to the thermo-sensitivity of monomer DMAEMA, transmittance experiment was carried out and it proved that the copolymer showed almost no thermal properties. It was found that this copolymer with different components of DMAEMA units exhibit diversely reversible CO2-triggered viscosity-response properties in aqueous solution. The viscosity experiment indicated that, the polymers with less mole ratio of DMAEMA units caused a decrease in its solution viscosity when treated with CO2. Conversely, the polymers with abundant mole ratio of DMAEMA units caused an increase in its solution viscosity when treated with CO2. When treated with N2, the solution properties get back to their initial and P(DMAEMA-AM-DMAC16) exhibits better viscosity variation properties in contrast to P(DMAEMA-AM).
