The compact activated carbon, compared with the conventional activated carbon, has some advantages, such as good adsorption properties, adjustable pore structure, uniform and reasonable pole size distribution, high additional value and goodeconomic benefits. At the same time, it is not easy to float in water owing to its highbulk density, is wearable and is convenient to regenerate for5-6times. They arehigh-quality activated carbon products, which apply to liquid phase fields. Becausethe briquetting technology of pulverized coal is very difficult, there is only a littlecompanies who could complete it in China. In this paper, the feasibility and production processes of producing thebriquetting activated carbon were investigated by the coal coming from coal mine inMontenegro, Xinjiang, blended with strong adhesive coal in Fukang and a newbinder based on the right amount of medium temperature coal tar pitch.1. The influence of the fineness of pulverized coal, the pressing pressure, thepowder material temperature, the moisture content and the ratio of coal on thebriquetting material strength was investigated in the briquetting experiments. Theresult is that when the material particle size of200mesh through the sieve by90%,the briquetting material strength could meet production requirements. When usinghot briquetting technology material with the60~70℃material temperature, keeping the right amount of moisture, controlling moisture content below5%, theratio of60%coal in Montenegro,30%of raw coal in Fukang and10%coal tar pitchcan be pressed into blocks, the production strength in laboratories could reach morethan90%.2. The appropriate carbonization final temperature was investigated by the meansof thermal analysis in the carbonization process. The final temperature of theBriquetting material carbonization process was controlled at550℃. The loss onignition of Briquetting is29%, which accounts to about48%of the total loss and thetheoretical yield of carbonized material reaches at71%. 3. The influence of the activation temperature, the activation time and the amountof activator on the adsorption feature of activated carbon was investigated in theactivation process. Studies have shown that the activation temperature below920℃,the activation time less than4h and the amount of water vapor as the activator at1mL/(min·g).4. The outcomes obtained from the experiments apply to the actual production. Bythe improvements of briquettes and carbonization process, we obtained,in a pilot, qualified performance activated carbon products whose Iodine value reaches1032mg/g, methylene blue value reaches184mg/g, bulk density is552kg/m3andstrength is91.8%.
