Factor analysis models have been widely used in source apportionment of particulate matter. However, such methods attempt to extract factors based on mathematical algorithm, thus, the obtained factor information may be not in line with the actual source features, obscuring the physical meaning. In order to solve above-mentioned problem, a source apportionment technology incorporating the reported species ratios into the factor analysis models solution was developed in this study. The coupling mechanism and the validity of this method were explored. Moreover, make actual application studies for particulate matter and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. This paper made a detailed analysis on the principles and parameters of ME2 model. The source apportionment technology was established based on pulling equations, incorporating the reported species ratios into the PMF solution. The validity of PMF-Species Ratios source apportionment technology (called PMF-SR) was explored through simulation experiments. The results obtained by PMF-SR were compared with the results for PMF model. It was found:(1) the results were closer to actual source features compared to those calculated using PMF. Hence, the results obtained from PMF-SR were physically satisfactory and the method was valid; (2) with the interference enhancement for receptor, the results obtained by two models deviated from true values gradually. However, the tolerance of PMF-SR to the incompatibility between the source and receptor was higher; (3) the technology made physical meaning of sources more clearly. Thus, in this study, the collinearity sources were attemped to apportion with the method and got ideal results in a certain extent.Next, the PMF-SR model was applied to study the ambient datasets of particulate matter and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The physically interpretable results show that the PMF-SR model is valid and applicable.
