The clinometer can supervise internal deformation condition inside dam body of tailings pond, provides visualized data information for deformation trend and deformation rate of dam body, and has been widely applied of safety supervision for all kinds of tailings ponds. The task of smart digital clinometer was developed on the basic of high precision angular velocity sensor, acceleration sensor and electronic compass sensor. The main work of the smart digital clinometer was divided into three steps:(1) The installation error of the sensors was researched and a method of eliminating the installation error was put forward. The quaternions-Unscented Kalman Filter was designed on the basic of a quaternion-UKF arithmetic which was put forward in this paper. This filter can improve the he measuring accuracy of intelligent digital inclinometer. So the gradiograph can measure Tailings dam bodies’ azimuth Angle and tilt Angle in high precision and robotized.(2) The hardware circuit was designed for the smart digital clinometer. The main part of the system hardware was power circuit, signal sample and disposal circuit, Sensor control circuit, CAN field bus commutation circuit and so on. The STM32F407 chip which was the microprocessor was used to data collection, processing and store. The CAN bus was used to data transmission to improve the anti-interference ability and increase the transmission distance.(3)The microcontroller programming and associated computer monitoring system was designed for the smart digital clinometer. The monitoring system that contains Communication module, data processing module and display module was developed in the language of C# on the VS platform. This gradiograph was applied in the on-line monitoring of the tailings dam deformation to collect the dam deformation data, transferred to PC by CAN bus and display the dam deformation information.This smart digital clinometer was effectiveness and reliability through experiment. Also it could find tailing dam the problems in time and had important reference significance on dam body measurement and early warning.
